The feedback from Golf Professionals is always the same: “My students do not have time to practice between lessons.” Or even worse: “My students are practicing by repeating 150 swings incorrectly which produces poor outcomes.”

This conclusion has inspired us to deploy the latest gesture-recognition technology available on the market. The result is a new tool within the software called: The ‘Match Pose’ mode.

Already available for golf professionals since the 2012 PGA Merchandise Show, the ‘Match Pose’ mode is a one-of-a-kind tool of Swinguru Pro. Swinguru Pro is a swing analysis software system using a single 3D depth-sensing camera. Our technology records and analyzes the golfer’s body motion in 3D and real time, without any markers.

The concept of the ‘Match Pose’ mode works like this: An Instructor decide to “break down” and record up to 7 key ‘positions’ or ‘poses’ of his student. Those poses are real 3D figures of the student and are recorded in his personalized profile. Each student is able to work on his swing sequence in order to reach his perfect swing appropriate to his own technique and morphology.

We call this technology a natural execution of Swinguru Pro’s mission. Our goal is to bring unique tools and features to Golf Instructors. It is important for us to offer a variety of tools to let the Instructors use their own teaching methods and personalize each lesson. We have already heard of many different ways to use the ‘Match Pose’ mode. Some instructors ask their student to start each lesson with 10 minutes of Position Matching. This allows them to intuitively get back into the ideal swing positions their Pro recorded and saved for them. Many Instructors record seven positions from start to finish of the swing while other Pros focus on three positions: address-top-impact.

We created what we call the “Cycle Mode.” After the ‘Position’ poses are recorded, the student moves into these saved positions one after another. When the user matches one position perfectly, depending on the selected level of difficulty (easy-medium-hard), the system automatically goes to the next recorded position. This feature is not only visually interactive but also gives audio feedback. This feature means the student can potentially practice with his eyes closed and work on his game without the golf instructor present.

What can swinguru do ?

swinguru records and replays the swings automatically after detection. Each swing can be controlled by offering traditional pause, forward and backward and frame-by-frame video. Simultaneous top, side and front views are shown on the same screen. The software recognizes each body gesture and therefore no mouse or keyboard control are necessary. Each training session is automatically saved including all swing data for replay and/or comparison at any time. Swing motions can also be recorded as pictures with the sophisticated « match your posture function ». This function freezes the golfer’s « set up », « 9 o’clock « & « top of backswing » positions for comparison and direct feedback live training.

Sheffield based specialist sports technology solution provider MIA Sports Technology has agreed a distribution partnership with guru training systems, a Belgium-based company specializing in sports movement analysis. The agreement will see MIA Sports Technology drive sales throughout its extensive customer base in Europe and the Middle East.

The company’s latest product innovation, swinguru, is a 3D golf training and teaching system based on full-body biomechanical swing analysis. It provides real-time visual feed-back on key body movements and swing characteristics.

The system projects a full 3 dimensional model of the body through an innovative camera system, with no need for any sensors attached to the player. The system is fully controlled through the use of the latest Gesture Recognition Technology where the user interacts with it through directive hand actions – no buttons, mouse or keyboard required!

swinguru was showcased to great acclaim at the recent PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. Sebastien Wulf, CEO of guru training systems, said that he was “delighted to seize the opportunity to showcase swinguru, the most advanced, brand new 3D golf training system to a worldwide audience”.

In an interview with the BBC, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the Kinect motion control interface released in 2010 for the Xbox 360 will be coming to PCs “in the right time.” But Belgian middleware company SoftKinetic might just beat Microsoft to the punch with its own white-label gesture interface for Atom-based PCs and set-top boxes. SoftKinetic, who launched a content partner program for its stereoscopic gesture-based platform called iisu last month, gave us a look at their product so far at CES 2011.

The company is developing the entire stack for manufacturers who want to offer their own Kinect-like experience on PCs and set-top boxes, from the software to the UI. SoftKinetic is manufacturing a camera as well, but its software and UI will be compatible with any depth-sensing camera, including Microsoft’s Kinect.

In the demonstration the company gave me, they were using an Intel Atom-based PC with one of their own 3D cameras. The demonstration included some rudimentary games, a media player interface, a general content management system and more. In the video below, the company demonstrates some of the more practical aspects of the package, including background isolation, which essentially is “greenscreening” that can be performed without the green screen, a zero-click text input system, and an adaptive UI that recognizes gestures as subtle as a wrist flick.

After I grabbed this video with SoftKinetic, I ran over and had a meeting with Microsoft’s Mediaroom group, who touted Kinect as a real breeding ground for unique interaction with broadcast television media and our TVs in general. LIkewise, a large number of other companies were showing off their contributions to the motion controller field, like Omekwhich concentrates on gesture recognition, and Aiken Labs and PrimeSense, both of which concentrate on the motion sensors themselves. The interface’s potential is widely recognized.

It’s funny, the hype surrounding 3D displays has been significant at the Consumer Electronics Show both this year and last, but CEA president Gary Shapiro himself has even dismissed the ability to watch TV and movies in three dimensions as simply a feature.

It seems the real future of 3D and our TVs might be in the cameras mounted atop our sets pointing back at us.

The Belgian company guru training systems (Brabant-Wallon, CEO, Mr.Sébastien WULF), will market their software which measures the swings of golfer and recreates them in 3D (Stereoscopic vision) in January 2011. This software shoots a swing in 3D camera, and displays its image on the monitor. It allows a player to check and understand visually bad habits or problems of his swing, and supports the technical improvements. The company plans to promote their product to golf schools or golf clubs in Europe and other countries.

This new software is equipped on the middleware which is supplied by Belgian partner Softkinetic S.A. The product is a set of a 3D camera and a software license, and its expected price is between 6,500 and 10,000 Euros. And guru training systems plans to market it in USA, Japan and South Korea.

The system assorts the physical body movements at the time of swing into innumerable points with 3D camera, and recreates the movements stereoscopically. It displays the angle of downswings, the shake of body’s axis or the facial movements in lines and shows them on a stereoscopic vision, which enables the player to see the bad habits or other problems easily.

It enables to see one’s swings from various angles, such as from the top, or the bottom, the left and the right and it can display the body movements on dotted lines. It is also possible to show them with the image of a golfer himself side by side.

guru training systems was founded in July 2010 and has been researching the measuring system of physical body movements during exercise in collaboration with The Catholic University of Leuven. The 3D images of their prototype were rough, but it was technically improved to display in detail. The company plans to add in step by step the optional functions, for example, a function to point out concretely how to improve problems by taking the swing of professional golfers as a model.

Mr.Attila BORBATH, Vice-President in charge of Sales & Marketing, remarks that “There are many indoor practice facilities in Japan and South Korea” and list them as their expected markets. He also indicates his willingness to develop the products for other ball games by saying “We would like to develop our products in the field of tennis or baseball”.
